Whether you are buying a beautiful ring for yourself or for someone else, one of the most challenging things about buying a ring online is making sure … It fits! We understand just how harrowing that can be, which is why we wanted to make sure you were equipped with all of the information you need to make sure the ring fits.
There are a few ways to go about determining the ring size. The first way is the way we’ve been doing it for generations, the analog way with a physical ring sizer. The second way is with an app called “Ring Sizer,” which will do the work for you on your phone. Whichever direction you choose, it’s important to remember that when you become a client at Jack Weir & Sons, you become a client for life and offer a lifetime guarantee of free sizing. That means a ring can be resized as many times as it needs to be over the course of your lifetime. Our fingers change size just like the rest of our body and we want to make sure that you are always able to wear the jewelry you love.
So let’s talk about the process of figuring out a ring size.
From an analog perspective, there are a few ways to go. The most old school is with a sizing ring, which is essentially a large ring with rings of all sizes so you can gauge which size fits you or your beloved best.
Another option is a finger size gauge, which does the same as the ring above, but uses a built in measuring system on the gauge to ensure comfortability and exactness of fit.
If you reach out to us here at Jack Weir & Sons, we would be happy to send you a ring sizer free of charge before or after you make your purchase!
Alternative Routes
If you want to be a little sneaky and find the size of someone else’s finger, you could procure a ring mandrel, which tells you the size of a ring. HOWEVER, if you are using this method, you would need to ensure that the ring you are measuring fits the finger you are purchasing the ring for, likely the left hand ring finger.
If you are in a time crunch, you could print out a paper sizing guide from a website like World of Printables. You cut it out, cut a slit out where noted and wrap it around your finger to determine your size.
Sizing in the Digital Age
There’s also a great new app called “Ring Sizer” (and a few others which are similar) which you can download from the app store. You’ll need a ring to find the size - but it’s super easy, you just have to download the app, place your ring on the circle at the top of the screen and move the sizer until it matches the outline of the ring. It will tell you the exact size you should be looking for!

Play the Guessing Game
While we would only recommend this as a last ditch effort, if you want to keep the tradition of secrecy alive in your engagement, feel free to guess her size. The average ring size is between a five and a seven for a woman of average height (5’4), but a lot of other factors are in play like genetics, overall body makeup, etc. If you don’t want to guess on your own, why not try to get a friend involved to do some snooping for you? That way you can make a more educated guess at the very least.
The good news? Here at Jack Weir & Sons, we provide prepaid insured Fedex overnight shipping labels for shipping both ways, so even if you guess incorrectly, we’ve got you covered!
