Citrine: A Golden Gem of Positivity

Citrine, with its warm, golden hues, is a gemstone that exudes positivity and radiates an aura of abundance. This beautiful gem has a rich history, and deep symbolism, and has adorned the jewelry boxes of many throughout time. Today, we'll delve into the origin and history of citrines, explore their symbolism, and take a look at some famous citrines that have captured hearts throughout history.

Origin and History

Citrine is a variety of quartz that serves as the November birthstone. Its hue ranges from pale yellow to deep amber, making it quite versatile. Citrine's name is derived from the French word "citron," which means lemon, and it's not hard to see why. This gemstone's vibrant yellow and golden orange colors are reminiscent of the delightfully bright and refreshing fruit itself.

Citrine is fairly easy to come by, relatively affordable, and available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, including very large sizes, making it perfect for large pendants and pieces that make a statement. It ranks a seven out of ten on the Mohs scale, meaning it is relatively durable against scratches and everyday wear and tear.

The origins of citrine can be traced back to ancient civilizations. The Greeks and Romans were known to use citrine in jewelry and carved ornaments, considering it a symbol of warmth and happiness. It was also used as a protective talisman against evil thoughts and snake venom.

Queen Victoria had a special fondness for the stone and used it to decorate her and Prince Albert’s summer residence in the mid-nineteenth century. But even before that, during the 17th century, Scottish men incorporated citrine into their kilt pins and shoulder brooches, and more shockingly, because of its durability (seven out of a possible ten on the Mohs scale), weapon makers also used citrine during this time as handles for daggers.

While natural citrine is rare, it can be found in various parts of the world, including Brazil, Madagascar, and Bolivia. Brazil, in particular, has been a significant source of citrine for centuries. The gem is often found in association with amethyst, another variety of quartz. When amethyst undergoes heat treatment, it can transform into the beautiful golden hues of citrine, which has led to the creation of much of the citrine available today.

Symbolism of Citrine

Citrine has long been associated with positive energy, happiness, and prosperity. Its sunny color is believed to bring warmth and optimism to the wearer's life. Historically, citrine was believed to possess protective properties, guarding against evil spirits and negative influences. It is also considered a stone of physical and emotional healing.

Citrine is often called the "Merchant's Stone" or the "Success Stone" due to its reputation for attracting wealth and success. It is believed to enhance one's financial well-being and business acumen, making it a popular choice for entrepreneurs or anyone who is looking for Abundance and Prosperity.

In spiritual practices like crystal healing, citrine is associated with the solar plexus chakra, which governs personal power and self-esteem. It is believed that wearing or meditating with citrine can balance and activate this chakra. This vibrant energy of citrine is also thought to dispel negativity and  promote a sense of joy and enthusiasm while stimulating creativity and helping individuals manifest their desires and goals by encouraging clarity of thought.
